Bled Castle and the Island: How to Plan the Perfect Day

The two icons of Lake Bled — the clifftop castle and the church on the island — and the order that beats the crowds.

Updated June 2026 · Bled Castle Tickets Concierge Team

Lake Bled has two unmissable sights: the castle looking down from its cliff, and the little island with its pilgrimage church looking up from the water. They're made to be done together, and a flexible open-date castle ticket makes the day easy to plan around the boat and the weather.

The island by pletna boat

The island is reached by pletna — the traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat rowed by a standing oarsman — from several jetties around the lake. On the island, 99 stone steps lead up to the Church of the Assumption, where it's tradition to ring the wishing bell. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip with time on the island.

You can also row yourself across in a hired rowboat, or in winter, when the boats are quieter, simply enjoy the view of the island from the shore and the castle.

The best order to do both

Do the island in the morning, when the lake is calm and the pletnas are fresh, then climb to the castle in the late afternoon for golden light on the Alps and the widest view down onto the island you just visited. This order keeps you ahead of the midday coach wave at the castle.

Because your castle ticket is open-date, you're never locked into a slot — if the morning clouds over, flip the plan and do the castle first.

Fitting in the rest of Bled

With a half-day to spare, add a slice of Bled cream cake (kremšnita) on the lakefront, a walk or e-bike around the 6-kilometre shoreline path, or a short drive to the Vintgar Gorge. The castle and island are the anchors; everything else slots around them.

Frequently asked

Can I see the castle and the island in one day?

Easily. Most visitors do the island by boat in the morning and the castle in the late afternoon, or the reverse — both fit comfortably in a day.

Is the island included in my castle ticket?

No — they're separate. The castle ticket covers the castle; the island is reached by a separate pletna boat or rowboat fare paid at the lake.

Which should I do first?

The island in the morning and the castle later in the day works best for calm water and good light, but an open-date ticket lets you swap if the weather changes.

How long is the boat trip to the island?

Plan on around 1.5–2 hours for the round trip including time on the island and the climb to the church.
